Sanibel Island has a rich, legendary history of conquest, pirates, and buried treasure. Its’ temperate climate, natural beauty, and idyllic charm quickly lured people seeking a restful vacation spot.
The island attracted many notables such as Charles Lindbergh, Thomas Edison, and President Teddy Roosevelt. Jay Norwood, “Ding” Darling, a Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist made nearby Captiva Island a regular winter retreat spot. His campaigning for protection of the islands’ fragile wetlands resulted in the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which occupies more than half of Sanibel Island.
His legacy of conservation still characterizes islanders who are passionately protective of its environment. As you enjoy the island’s unspoiled beauty and observe all the wildlife in its natural habitat, you’ll discover the real treasures of Sanibel Island.
The City of Sanibel partnered WGCU Public Media to put out a excellent 4 part series about the history of Sanibel Island.
