J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge

The J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is a popular attraction on Sanibel Island, drawing thousands of visitors each year. What makes this wildlife refuge so popular is its size and biological diversity. Situated on over 5000 acres of protected Sanibel Island land the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge has over 230 species of birds, 50 species of reptiles and amphibians and 32 species of other types of mammals.
One of the most popular attractions of the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is the 5-mile Wildlife Drive. There you can see wood storks, white ibis, yellow-crowned night herons, and reddish, great, snowy egrets, bald eagles, crocodiles, beautiful marshland and more!
Other activities on the refuge include hiking trails, canoe trails and an visitor/activity center.
Hours and Fees for The J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge are:
Wildlife Drive is open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year except Fridays.
The refuge entrance fee is $4 per car, and tram tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children
Canoe rentals are available at the Tarpon Bay parking lot.
Membership in the Ding Darling Wildlife Society is $12 for individuals and $17 for families.
