Check out a picture of the Great Blue Heron snapped by Island Inn guest Ty Shimko.  That’s one unlucky fish!

The Great Blue Heron is an excellent fisher.  They will usually remain motionless waiting for their prey to approach before striking.   They not only eat fish but frogs, turtles, young birds, bird eggs, snakes, insects, mice, moles, gophers, and other small mammals as well.

There are many Great Blue Herons on Sanibel Island.  You can find them in the shallow shore  waters, marshland and other bodies of water searching for their next meal.

Thanks for the picture Ty!
