For anyone who has ever visited Sanibel Island before, you know that it is one of the best places in the world for shelling. The Island Inn’s location was specifically chosen on the bend of the south side of Sanibel Island, so when the currents washed up shells, they would be directed here. Still today, Island Inn’s beach is one of the best locations on the islands to find tulips, olives, fragile paper fig shells and the rarest of them all, the brown speckled junonia.

Established in 1937, the Sanibel Shell Fair is the first one of its kind to take place in the United States. In fact, the very first Shell Fair was hosted at none other than the Island Inn – shell fanatics, visitors and locals alike gathered at the Inn to show off their shells over a 4 day period in March. Today, the annual Shell Fair is held at the Sanibel Community House to accommodate the larger crowds, and in February, “Shellabration” 2012 will commence. “Shellabration” is an island wide celebration honoring the 75th Anniversary of The Sanibel Shell Fair Show, which will run from February 26 to March 4th 2012.

The first event to kick of “Shellabration” will be the Opening Gala on February 26th at Traditions on the Beach, our well-loved restaurant located at right here at the Island Inn. Guests of the Inn as well as island visitors are welcome to purchase tickets to this historically grand event.
