During these long hot days of summer Sanibel Island fishing is proving to be as hot as the weather! Sanibel Island’s location in the gulf provides excellent fishing opportunities for fisherman, from experienced to novice.

One of the more popular species of fish to catch in the waters around Sanibel Island is the Atlantic Tarpon, or more specifically Megalops atlanticus. Nicknamed the Silver King these awesome fish are greenish or bluish on top and silver along their sides.  Their mouth is large and contains a bony plate on the lower jaw.

Although they are certainly a beautiful fish what makes the tarpon so popular is its size and the fight it puts up when hooked.  Some of the biggest Tarpons caught on record have weighed upwards of 350 pounds and have had a length of 98 inches.  That’s more than eight feet! This is not the norm and most Tarpon catches average between 25 to 80 pounds(still pretty big!)
